Article: http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/president-trump-unleashes-fired-fbi-director-james-comey-fake-media-n758341
Erik Ortiz wrote an article, giving an update on President Trump's feelings about firing James Comey, FBI Director. Ortiz uses loaded diction with intense descriptors for Trump's lashing out on Twitter like "punishing" and "tumultuous". He uses a excited tone with a negative connotation to emulate President Trump's anger over being caught in a lie. Ortiz is amused by this update and expressed his amazement at President Trump's audacity with the information he presents. The article is written like an expose piece, in which Donald Trump is exposed for possibly not telling the truth about the reason he fired Comey. Ortiz includes Trump's tweets and his quotes during an interview with NBC's Lester Holt. He then expands on how Trump's word is inconsistent with White House officials. Ortiz intended to inform the audience further on how unstable and inconsistent Trump is and express how the intensity of his rage towards "fake news" and the media reveals a lot about Trump's character.

Daniella Silva covers President Donald Trump's commentary on Kim Jong Un, leader of North Korea. Her overall coverage of Trump's commentary speaks for itself, including many quotes from Trump and information about his relations with China. Silva's structuring of the article demonstrates her opinions on the matter, by listing all of his quotes, describing details of his new revelations about North Korea, his change of heart towards China, and his thoughts about his presidency so far. President Trump believes that Kim Jong Un is a "smart cookie". He believes this so much that he revised his attitude towards Chinese President Xi Jinping, no longer accusing China of being a "currency manipulator", and is now working with China to monitor North Korea. President Trump also explains that he has "had jobs that were tougher". Silva's feelings towards the Trump then shine through, stating facts about his former occupation as a real estate developer, reality TV star, etc. Throughout the article, Silva uses a neutral diction, inserting her ideas at the end, by stating facts that contradict President Trump's dialogue. Silva appeals strongly to the audience's ethos, with heavy dialogue, straight from Trump. She does a really good job by not commenting on his quotes and only interjecting to include facts about Trump's stance on diplomatic relations. Silva intends to let the audience decide for themselves how they feel about Trump's commentary on North Korea and China. This is one of the more innovative articles I've come across on this website because it actually delivers news without overwhelming leaning towards a position. It is neutral and clear and provides a perfect list of information in which someone can use to determine the credibility of President Trump. Article: http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/people-s-climate-march-spurs-thousands-descend-white-house-n752861
The author has a loaded and charged diction towards the climate activists. They used words like "descended" as if rushing into a war. The author seems attached to the climate change movement, displaying their opposition to the new presidential administration and their changes in EPA guidelines. The tone of the article when describing protesters is grandiose, motivational and supportive. When discussing the presidential administration and the head of the EPA, the tone drops to a annoyed and slightly sarcastic tone. The author appeals to the audience's pathos with a short, powerful introduction to the article. Depending on political beliefs, the audience is motivated and inspired or annoyed and distainful. The author is trying to further demonstrate the sentiment that "climate change is real" and this movement matters, by putting emotional emphasis on information about the protest. The author's purpose is to inform and convey excitement wbout the Climate March. The beginning of the article talks about the valiant bravery of this movement and the people who participated. In the middle of the article, the author talks about Scott Pruitt's disagreement with the movement and Trump's mocking of climate change awareness. The author does not elaborate anymore on Pruitt and Trump's opinions, which are clearly inconsistent with theirs because they cut harshly to tweets and pictures of the march without any transition. Despite my excitement and support of the movement, I feel that this article lacked details that I would've liked to know like leaders in the movement that attended or the actual effect of the protest so far. The author's excitement got in the way of valuable information about the movement and the progress it's making. The author claims that the climate activists sought out to send a message saying that climate change is real. The beginning to the article describes the scene of the protest and who was involved in organizing the event. The middle covers opposers of the movement and their statements on climate change, which may have sparked this protest. The end of the article features multiple tweets from the movement. Smith's voice is neutral toned allowing the information to be the spotlight. She includes sufficient amounts of dialogue and facts to support her argument. People across the United States are concerned about President Trump's diplomatic skills due to his inappropriate actions during the election. We are also in a tense situation politically with Asia in general so it could be said that Smith saw it necessary to report any good things happening diplomatically. The audience is those concerned about U.S. relations with other countries, conservatives and liberals alike. This is a national event that involves the wellbeing of the U.S. population as well as the Philippines population. The purpose is to update and inform on U.S. relations with the Philippines. The audience can either seek solace in the fact that the U.S. might not be at odds with one country anymore or they can be angered and use this article to make a decision for the next few elections. The author is writing about diplomatic relations with the Philippines. The tone overall is neutral yet somewhat hopeful of improvements of the U.S. and Philippines relationship. The author's diction is politically technical, making sure to use quotes rather than insert there own ideologies. The text also has a neutral connotation. They use words such as "contentious" to describe the war in drugs in the Philippines as well as "firebrand" to describe the Philippines leader, Rodrigo Duterte. The author seems intent on keeping the story neutral and straight, seeing as this could potentially result in a historic event. The beginning of the article describes President Trump's feelings towards the call with President Duterte. Depending on the audience's political beliefs, this appeals to their pathos by instilling emotions of relaxation, knowing that there isn't any conflict between them. Others in the audience might be annoyed if they do not favor close relations with the Philippines. Either way, the beginning appeals to pathos. The middle of the article appeals to the audience's logos, giving them more details about the conversation and supplemental facts about U.S. relations with the Philippines under the last administration. It even has statistics about President Duterte's fight against illegal drug usage for his current political agenda. The article ends with a somewhat humorous fact that the Philippine embassy released a statement, rejecting their portrayal in an American tv show. The author's intent for inserting this fact is unknown. It seems out of place and does not really fit in the atmosphere of the article. The author's purpose was to inform the audience on the current relations between the Philippines and the U.S. The middle of the article, where they are breaking down the details of prior relations with the Philippines speaks to their purpose of simply informing. As a result, the audience is now more aware of international relations of the U.S. I definitely feel more informed after reading this article. The author claimed that Trump held a friendly call with Rodrigo Duterte and that they address concerns over North Korea. Then, they go into the history of U.S. relations with the Philippines under the last presidential administration, detailing how negative it was. At the end of the article, the author explains that relations could be changing for the better. The author uses statistics and facts to defend their claim. they fall weak on how exactly this call may result in a change in relations. They simply say that it "appears" to make a change but it does not necessarily say why. Is it because of Donald Trump and his skills? It is because of a change in ideals of Duterte? Its hard to say. NBC News Digital fell short with this one. Article: http://www.nbcnews.com/news/latino/rep-ileana-ros-lehtinen-first-latina-woman-elected-congress-announces-n753021
Silva wrote another article on Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, the first Latina woman elected to Congress, who will be retiring. Once again, Silva's writing style shines through, using a neutral diction and light tone to describe Ros-Lehtinen's reasons for retirement. Silva seems somewhat respectful and reflective of Ros-Lehtinen's retirement, using quotes that express that the congresswoman is not leaving on bad terms or leaving because of President Trump's election. She appeals to the audience's ethos, showcasing Ros-Lehtinen's character with her dialogue and a tweet from House Speaker Paul Ryan. Ryan praised Ros-Lehtinen and states his enjoyment working with her in Congress. Silva, like in her article on Trump and North Korea, is intent on informing the audience and allowing them to have a neutral set of facts to make their own conclusions, which is very respectable and a writing style that I enjoy. By writing this article, Silva also pays respect to Ros-Lehtinen, making sure that the public knows her reasons for leaving and her sincerity as the first Latina woman elected to congress. Silva uses quotes from her interview with the Miami Herald and information given to NBC News. Article: http://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/china-calls-restraint-north-korea-uss-carl-vinson-arrives-n750041
Petra Cahill writes an article about China's call for restraint to North Korea, the U.S., and all other parties involving North Korean tensions. Cahill shows President Xi Jinping as a dominating force and his authoritative voice hints the severity of the situation. Cahill appeals to the audience's pathos by intense descriptions of the tensions between the U.S., China and North Korea. She shows the complexity of the situation and her views towards President Trump are lightly expressed. Cahill acknowledges President Trump's reckless way of approaching this diplomatic issue and how China has awaken in thought. They realize that reckless behavior can lead to a devastating domino effect of wars and possible nuclear extinction. Unlike other news sources, Cahill is not afraid or opposed to the idea that President Trump can be dangerous and that is what she is trying to convey to the audience. Her tone and use of information towards the end of the article reels in the audience with a serious claim that tensions could go awry at any point. This article is sobering compared to the sensationalized articles on Donald Trump and his anomalies. Article: http://www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/briefs-flood-supreme-court-support-gavin-grimm-n728286
Gavin Grimm's, a transgender boy "fighting for the right to use boys-only facilities", is receiving tons of support from the public. Mary Emily O'hara seems hopeful and excited about these developments, hinting their possible liberal political views. O'hara describes those opposing the Texas bill as "stunning" and "powerful", making sure to acknowledge that Gavin Grimm is fighting a battle and he has the support of many powerful political figures in Congress, national education organizations, the NAACP, and LGBTQA communities. The fact that NBC News Digital features a liberal article like this demonstrates it's diversity of contributors. O'hara appeals strongly to the audience by showing Grimm's credibility and the importance of his fight. She includes various facts about the status of Grimm's case and how many people are in support of his movement, like the NAACP and Congress. O'hara does this to inform about how the controversial topic of public bathrooms and gender, by demonstrating how this Grimm's case is progressing. This gives hope to others in the same situations, involved in the same cases, and facing the same issues with transgender rights everyday. O'hara displays her passion and overall hopefulness about the case in the beginning and the end of the article. She includes hopeful quotes like, "Nobody is going to stop fighting" and "No matter what happens, nobody is going back into the shadows", by the ACLU Attorney Chase Strangio. These quotes convey the author's optimism as well as Strangio's optimism about the case. The audience is encouraged by the article to be accepting of transgender student rights and general LGBTQA rights in general. This type of article is classic among social justice articles and does not really provide a new stance on transgender rights. It does, however, provide information and update viewers following the case, giving a general run down on Grimm's case and the support it is receiving. O'hara's argument is that Gavin Grimm has and deserves support for his case. She lists at the beginning, the people who support Grimm's case and the opposing policies "were just a cover for discrimination". In the middle, O'hara details why Grimm deserves support and how important his case is for the entire transgender, non-binary, and intersex community. She uses evidence from the her interpretation of former Supreme Court decisions and testimonies from various LGBTQA students and supporters. The end consists of final facts about the amount of legal support in favor of Grimm's case and overall optimism about the case, as stated by Strangio. Overall, the argument is pretty basic and standard, lacking an original stance on the issue yet, it maintains a neutrality that is valuable to NBC New Digital's purpose which is to deliver the news and further connect (or divide) the world. |
